The Hothouse Flowers star teamed up with master concertina player Cormac Begley, from West Kerry, for an evening of Irish culture at Muckross Schoolhouse as part of the 17th Culture Night/Oíche Chultúir programme.

The free concert at the appropriate venue was part of a national day celebrating the richness and diversity of culture in Ireland, with free creative and arts events funded by the Arts Council in association with Kerry County Council.

Ó Maonlaí set up the Hothouse Flowers in 1985 alongside his great pal and school friend Fiachna Ó Braonáin, initially as buskers on the streets of Dublin before the public sat up and took notice.

They took their influences from a mix of rock, soul and gospel and their debt album, People, reached number one in the Irish album charts and number two in the UK.

Cormac Begley can play over a dozen forms of concertina, from bass to piccolo, with great aplomb and his debut album received critical acclaim.
