Number’s up for this kiosk

photo-125THIS could be Killarney’s latest tourist attraction – the phone that never rings.

But it will soon be reaching the end of the line, if local politicians have their way.

They have engaged themselves with the whole saga surrounding the double public telephone kiosk located just outside the door of Killarney town hall.

And while they’re not exactly hung up with the situation, they would rather it be removed sooner rather than later.

The problem, as Cllr John Joe Culloty told this week’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal Authority, is that there’s no demand for it anymore.

It has been confirmed that less than one phone call per day is made from the double kiosk.

And whatever way you do the maths, that just doesn’t add up

Whether it rings or not is really beside the point, Cllr Culloty points out.

“It’s unsightly. It doesn’t look the part outside the town hall which is the main building in the town,” he said.

The phone is one of very few kiosks remaining in the town which is really just a sign of the times as virtually everybody now has a mobile phone attached to their hands.

Council officials have been in contact with eir to ask them to remove the kiosk and are awaiting an official response.

But it’s only a matter of time for this kiosk’s number is certainly up.
