Not so troubled waters but bridges cause anger

Cllr Michael Cahill: increase in road rage
Cllr Brendan Cronin: It’s time they delivered

A NOTORIOUSLY dangerous bridge is causing tempers to fray and it has led to a sharp rise in the number of road range incidents between drivers, it has been reported.

The narrow Caragh Bridge – on the N70 road between Killorglin and Glenbeigh – has led to angry flashpoints and the need for better signage and road markings is adding to the problems, Cllr Michael Cahill has claimed.

“I have received a number of complaints of road rage incidents at Caragh Bridge and I have witnessed an incident where two cars went bumper-to-bumper,” he said.

“I have also heard of a case where two people have gone toe-to-toe,” Cllr Cahill added.

He said problems at the bridge – located on the main ring of Kerry route – continue to fester and there is an urgent need for better signage and markings.
Kerry County Council has insisted, however, that there is a comprehensive signage scheme currently in place at Caragh Bridge, providing information to road users that the bridge narrows to a single lane.

“The final signs at either end of the bridge indicate that motorists must yield to traffic on the bridge. Placing further signs will not improve the flow of traffic at this bridge,” a spokesperson said.

Closer to Killarney, meanwhile, Cllr Brendan Cronin has again raised the situation regarding the application for a new bridge on the R563 at Listry.

He said he had written to Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, Minister of State Brendan Griffin and others seeking an update and it’s time they delivered on the matter once and for all.

A preliminary appraisal form seeking funding to proceed was submitted in August last year but a response from the department is still awaited by Kerry County Council.
