KILLARNEY Rugby Football Club held its annual golf classic Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, on the renowned Mahony’s Point course, last Friday with an impressive 46 teams of four turning out and a host of sponsors supporting a very well-run event.
The cool, windy conditions could not prevent some fine scoring with two scores counting on each hole and three on the 18th.
Fifth prize went to Killarney School of English, fourth was won by the Bowler’s Garage team and third prize went to Junior Finnegan’s team half of which were from his home town of Gort, Co Galway Junie’s old home town.
Second prize went to early pace setters with 97 points, McDonagh and Associates but the first prize went to Richard Walsh and Associates.
Four retired sharpshooters came in with 98 points to take home super golf bags sponsored by Walsh Brothers Shoes. The longest men’s drive on the index one 11th hole was won by cannonball hero Denis Pio Moriarty of Heather at the Gap of Dunloe while the longest ladies’ drive was won by irrepressible Mary Geaney on the 9th. Nearest-the-pin was Limerick hurler and gentleman golfer Mike Leahy with a super strike to within three feet on the 12th.
Finally the hole-in-one prize was not won so nobody got to cycle home in style on a state-of-the-art racing bicycle, despite Noreen Coffey striking the pin on the stunning setting of the 18th green.
Fantastic food was served up by Paul Cotter and his team at The Chapel with wonder burgers provided by Flesk Meats and chicken kebabs provided by Tim Jones’ Butchers. A great spread was enjoyed by all and coolly washed down by a glass of Killarney Lager from the star Brewery.
The club extends sincere thanks to all our generous sponsors, supporters and Killarney Golf Club for making it a super day in advance of the Ring of Kerry Cycle sand the Munster Final weekend. Thanks especially to the committee, especially hard working Junior Finnegan and captain Ger Moynihan.
