‘It’s no silver bullet – but it will help’

Chamber chief Paul O’Neill: “fantastic news”

PLANS for the development of a new 190-space car and bus park in the town centre – first revealed by KillarneyToday.com yesterday – have been enthusiastically endorsed by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

Kerry County Council is in the process of acquiring a prime 1.25-acre site on Rock Road, owned by the Mercy Order, and the required Part VIII public consultation and planning process for the development will be initiated in the coming weeks.

Provision has been made for a new footpath for pedestrians on the Mercy Convent side of Rock Road to link the car park to the town centre and the existing traditional stone wall would be set back a further 4.5m from the road with a new entrance to the facility provided.

The council’s plans for the new facilityA new footpath for pedestrians on the convent side of Rock Road will also be provided to link the new car/bus park to the town centre.

Responding to the plan, Killarney Chamber President, Paul O’Neill, remarked:  “It is absolutely fantastic news and huge credit is due to the council.”

He added that the issue of traffic and parking is the number one concern for Chamber members and the business organisation has worked and will continue to work closely with the Killarney Municipal District executive and councillors to find solutions.

The Chamber said it fully recognises that land procurement is far from straight forward in Killarney.

“It is no easy task but the town is only getting busier and though we do not believe that this is the silver bullet to solve our traffic problems, it will certainly help,” the Chamber chief added.
