No light between Oceans and Smalltown

Michael Fassbender was brilliant in Light Between Oceans

MICHAEL Fassbender has been nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award (IFTA) for his brilliant performance in the gripping drama Light Between Oceans in which he starred alongside his partner Alicia Vikander.

The Fossa actor, who played a troubled World War I veteran turned lighthouse keeper in the movie, is hotly tipped to clinch the award which will be presented at a gala reception in the Mansion House in Dublin on Saturday, April 8.

Fassbender, who received the Order of Innisfallen award in Killarney last October, is currently promoting his movies Assassin’s Creed and Trespass Against Us throughout the world.

Oscar nominee Ruth Negga, The Lobster star Colin Farrell, screen veteran Liam Cunningham for Game of Thrones and 50 Shades heart-throb Jamie Dornan are all in the running for IFTAs.

Fassbender is nominated in the Actor in a leading role category and his competition will be Dornan (The Siege of Jadotville); Colm Meaney (The Journey); Alex Murphy (The Young Offenders) and Mark O’Halloran (History’s Future).

Also nominated for an IFTA is 29-year-old Kerry film director Gerard Barrett from Knockanure, Listowel for his power-packed mini-series Smalltown, starring Pat Shortt. It is nominated in the best drama category and Barrett himself is shortlisted for the best scriptwriter prize.

Smalltown is also nominated on the best original score category with Patrick Cassidy in the running for recognition.
