AN additional disability parking space or an extra age-friendly spot cannot be provided immediately in front of Killarney Post Office because of its close proximity to a pedestrian crossing, Kerry County Council has pointed out.
In keeping with Transport Infrastructure Ireland specifications, the parking of vehicles within 15 metres on the approach to a pedestrian crossing is not permitted to allow visibility by drivers of pedestrians preparing to cross the street.
The council said it is therefore not in a position to provide extra parking spaces outside the busy PO on New Street.
The matter was raised by Cllr Niall Kelleher who asked for two age-friendly spaces or one additional blue badge spot to be provided at the location.
“One wheelchair space outside the post office is not enough and one age-friendly space is not sufficient,” said Cllr Kelleher who highlighted problems being experienced by the elderly or those with disabilities who are not in a position to walk from the town’s main car parks to the post office.
