No funds for major work until 2021 – at the earliest

The condition of the road surface on Ross Road is deplorable

IT is widely regarded as one of the worst road surfaces in Killarney but Ross Road still hasn’t made the cut for repair work and it is likely to be some years before it’s properly tackled.

Kerry County Council officials have confirmed that the road leading to and from Ross Castle and Killarney Racecourse is not contained in the proposed three-year roads programme which will run to 2021.

In the meantime, however the council has promised to continue to maintain the road as best it can.

Mayor John Sheahan: highlighted the issue

The news was described as “very disappointing” by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John Sheahan, who has been highlighting the state of Ross Road for a number of years.

He said there is a channel on the road caused by jarvey horses and it is very dangerous.

Cllr Sheahan had raised the state of Ross Road as far back as May 2016 when he pointed out a very noticeable lag on the roadway leading from Ross Castle towards town, with a major dip appearing on a long, narrow section of the road.

The section of roadway in question, on the left hand side travelling from the castle towards the racecourse. It is prone to serious flooding and, in addition to vehicles and bicycles, it is also used on a daily basis by jaunting cars.
