Just over 24 hours after the dangers at the junction were again highlighted at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council, yet another serious road crash has occurred at a notorious blackspot this Friday evening.
The two-vehicle collision happened at Finnegan’s Cross in Kilcummin, off the main Killarney-Farranfore road, before 6 o’clock and three ambulances, two units of the fire service, paramedics and gardai rushed to the scene.
At a council meeting on Monday, Cllr Marie Moloney described the delay in dealing with safety works at Finnegan’s Cross as unacceptable and she said the situation had been dragging on for two years.

“Apart from the erection of signs, no work has taken place on the ground. This is not fair on the people living in the locality who use this junction, where there is no sight distance, and they are risking their lives every day,” she said.
Cllr Donal Grady has also highlighted the dangers at the crossroads on previous occasions.
Cllr Moloney was told by officials that following negotiations with the relevant landowners, an estimate for the proposed design had established that the cost would exceed the finance allocated for the project.
Council officials have since prepared and submitted a project appraisal report to the Department of Transport in an attempt to have it approved via an alternative funding source.
“Once the source of funding has been established, Kerry County Council will be able to conclude the acquisition, by agreement of the required land, subject to statutory process approval.
