New push for walk-cycle path on busy bypass road

The proposal relates to the area inside the crash barrier on the Killarney Bypass road

There has been a call for a walkway and cycle lane to be developed inside an existing crash barrier on the Killarney Bypass road to make the area safer for everybody.

Cllr Martin Grady said it would provide a safe option for pedestrians and cyclists and there is sufficient room for the development to be undertaken.

He said a similar route alongside the Castleisland Bypass road is working well and the area from the top of Lewis Road to the Cleeny Roundabout would be very suitable as there is a pedestrian pathway already in place with room to provide a cycle path.

The road is dangerous on days of matches in Fitzgerald Stadium when both sides of the bypass can be lined with parked vehicles

Tabling his proposal at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council, Cllr Grady said it is currently very dangerous for people walking the road, particularly on days of matches in Fitzgerald Stadium when both sides of the bypass can be lined with parked vehicles, making it very dangerous for people walking to and from the stadium.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said it was a good suggestion and it might provide a much more preferable option that the underpass that is being planned to run under the road from Ballydribeen to Lewis Road.

Council officials said proposals have already been developed to introduce enhanced pedestrian and cycling facilities between the Cleeny Roundabout and the top of Lewis Road and on to the location for a proposed new roundabout.

A further proposal to introduce an underpass along that section of roadway is also in the pipeline.

The council said the proposals will be outlined to the elected members once preliminary technical approval has been received from Transport Infrastructure Ireland which is expected by the end of this year.
