A new block of single rooms, with a total of 128 beds – 88 replacement and 40 additional stock – is to be developed at University Hospital Kerry as part of a new programme of work which was confirmed this Wednesday.
The Growing, Rejuvenating and Optimising (GRO) programme is aimed at implementing a range of projects and initiatives in response to findings and recommendations of both the recently published HIQA report – which was very critical of some facilities – and a HSE review visit to UHK in 2022.
In addition to the new single bed wards, the plan provides for off-site administration accommodation, the provision of a sixth operating theatre, an interim and permanent new oncology build and the completion of a new laboratory.
The overarching plan, with over 200 actions, will also see the establishment of a clinical leadership governance model for the hospital and the appointment of new and priority posts.

The projects will address serious concerns raised in the HIQA report and the HSE review visit regarding the quality of care for patients.
To ensure the successful implementation of the programme, a model of governance is in place with a HSE oversight team at national level and the hospital has also established an implementation team on the ground while HSE specialist support and external support is also encompassed.
“With the implementation of this programme, UHK aims to continue providing high-quality care to its patients while improving its facilities and services and ultimately patient outcomes and experience,” University Hospital Kerry general manager, Mary Fitzgerald, said.
“We are both excited and eager, in equal measure, to launch this ambitious and progressive programme of work. GRO UHK will enable us to grow and develop, rejuvenate and optimise our hospital, which will ultimately improve the care we provide to our patients,” she added.
