Work on a long-promised public skatepark in Killarney is expected to commence in the second quarter of this year once legal formalities relating to the grant aid are ironed out.
A meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council has been told that the €235,000 project is being funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, under the sports capital programme, with additional 30 per cent of the required funding sourced through the Strategic Community Support Fund.
Kerry County Council said it is currently awaiting the finalisation of legal formalities in relation to the grant.
Browne Brothers Site Service Ltd have been awarded the contract and will commence works immediately on completion of the legal matters. The contractors will work in association with Spanish based company, Vulcano, who are specialists in that type of facility.

The council said it is anticipated the skatepark will be commenced by the second quarter of this year.
The matter was raised by Cllr Donal Grady who asked about the engagement of a contractor and the likely commencement date.
The skateboard park will be developed, adjacent to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, off the MD O’Shea Roundabout.

The council will provide insurance cover and maintain the high-visibility facility which, it is anticipated, will be open from 9am to 9pm in summertime and from 9am to 6pm in winter.
The park will be surrounded by a 2.4m high lockable fence outside of those hours to ensure the interests of residents living in the vicinity are protected.
The facility, which will not be lit but will have CCTV coverage, will consist of bordered flat slab with integrated street features such as rails and grid blocks.
The surface will be constructed using a smooth durable concrete to minimise noise pollution and a 3m wide green area and safety zone will surround the facility which is located at the side of the N22 with existing trees to be maintained.
