Kerry Sinn Féin has elected 24-year-old Ardfert man, Daithí Fitzgerald, as their new chair of the Comhairle Ceantair, marking a new chapter for the party in the county. The announcement followed the party’s AGM on Monday.

A Master’s student at DCU and a rising voice within the party, Daithí was elected to Sinn Féin’s Ard Comhairle at the 2024 Ard Fheis.

“I’m genuinely excited about what we can achieve together over the next number of months and years. This is a real opportunity, not just to keep things ticking over, but to build, grow, and strengthen the organisation at every level,” he said.

Fitzgerald outlined a clear focus on internal development, member engagement, community outreach and early preparation for future elections.

“With no local or general elections immediately ahead, this is the perfect time for growth right across the county. We have a chance now to strengthen the foundations of the party in Kerry and ensure we’re ready to deliver when the time comes,” he remarked.

His election comes at a time when Kerry is represented by four government TDs, leaving Sinn Féin as the only opposition voice in the county.

“Kerry now has four government TDs propping up a system that continues to fail our communities.

“Pa Daly remains the sole opposition TD in the county, standing up for workers, families, and rural communities who are being left behind.”

“The current government does not represent change, only more of the same policies that have continued to fail people in Kerry and across the state,” the new chairman said.
