New lay-out for roundabout is being explored

The very busy Cleeney roundabout in Killarney

Decision makers on national road developments are considering a number of options for a roundabout in Killarney where a number of accidents – including one fatal incident – have occurred.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) engineers are examining the roundabout at Cleeney to identify the best design to accommodate vehicles while, at the same time, promoting Active Travel initiatives and ensuring greater safety.

A meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council heard that TII officials are aware of local concerns about the location, particularly the close proximity of a pedestrian crossing at the exit from the roundabout on to the bypass road.

Provisional plans for the road improvements

“They are considering doing some trials. If It works, you advance it. If it doesn’t, you withdraw it,” senior roads engineer Paul Curry remarked.

He said the accident history at the roundabout will be taken into consideration before any new plan is implemented.

A mother-of-six who died as a result of injuries sustained in a road traffic accident at the roundabout in July 2020. She was crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing when she was struck by a lorry.

Any work undertaken at the roundabout will be carried out in association with major improvement works from that junction to Madam’s Hill, on the main Tralee road.

The Cleeney roundabout has five exit point, one going on to the main Tralee road, another leading to the bypass, a link with Rock Road and a turn for the Hans Liebherr Road but there is also an entry point and exit to and from a busy shopping area.
