Four years after safety issues and traffic gridlock on the busy New Road-Rock Road junction in Killarney were highlighted at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council, proper traffic calming measures are now to be implemented.
Kerry County Council plans to install a controlled raised crossing on New Road with the existing crossing at the library also to be upgraded.
The junction linking the two roads will also be realigned.
The planned work and traffic calming measures will provide improved pedestrian and cycling access in an area where two primary schools and three secondary schools are located.
As it currently stands, a council employee has to manually erect and remove signs to block traffic from entering New Road at school opening and closing times.
Four years ago Cllr Maura Healy-Rae – now Mayor of Killarney – highlighted the dangers associated with traffic gridlock on New Road, particularly at school opening and closing times.
She had asked officials to explore the possibility of having a drop-off and collection point in Rock Road car park with a pathway for students to walk to school – since provided – and she urged communication between Kerry County Council and the schools with the intention of formulating a plan to address concerns.
