New housing plan is a ‘critical development’ for Killarney

The 249-house development will be a big boost to Killarney where housing is in very short supply

The fact that plans for a 249-unit housing development at Cronin’s Wood, Upper Park Road, Killarney will feature a variety of housing types has been welcomed by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae.

KillarneyToday.com yesterday revealed that Kenmare Plant Hire has been granted planning permission for the development after An Bord Pleanála upheld an initial decision by Kerry County Council despite objections from a group of anglers.

Cllr Healy-Rae said as she has continuously highlighted the need for further housing development, particularly in the Killarney area, she wants to wish the developer well in their construction of what is a critical development for the area.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae: Welcomed news

The development will include:

* 117 three bed houses
* 18 two bed houses
* Two five bed houses
* Six four bed houses
* 68 two bed apartments
* 38 one bed apartments
* A crèche
* Play facilities
* 500 parking spaces

At a recent meeting of the Killarney Municipal District Council, Cllr Healy-Rae asked officials for an update on how many vacant and void properties were in the area.

She was told the total number was 17 of which 11 were vacant for over two years, three were vacant for between one and two years and three more are vacant for less than 12months.

There are various contributory factors in the length of time properties have been vacant including the condition of the houses, fire damage and procurement delays.

“Kerry County Council is committed to ensuring that any property in its ownership, which becomes vacant, is re-tenanted as soon as possible, subject to available finance,” officials stressed.
