ASTUTE tactician John Sugrue is the man chosen to get the Kerry Under 20 squad back on track after a disappointing season which saw them being comprehensively beaten by eventual All-Ireland winners Cork.

The Kerry GAA has ratified Sugrue as the man to replace Jack O’Connor, who takes over the Kildare senior side, while Mike Quirke, of Kerins O’Rahillys, succeeds Sugrue at the helm with the Laois seniors in what resembles a game of managerial musical chairs.
The Renard clubman – now living in Portlaoise where he works as chartered physiotherapist – was an outstanding midifleder in his playing days and he played a big part in the success of South Kerry divisional teams in the Kerry SFC in 2004 and 2005.
He was South Kerry manager when they beat Killarney Legion, after a replay, in the 2015 county championship final.

He became Kerry’s physical trainer when Pat O’Shea took charge of the Kerry seniors in 2007 and they went on to lead the county to an All-Ireland success as well as reaching the final the following year.
Sugrue, surprisingly, stepped down as Laois manager in July, after two successful years in charge, during which the county gained two successive promotions, from Division 4 to Division 2.
He also led them to the last 12 business end of the championship and they contested the Leinster Final against Dublin in 2018.
Now married with children, John owns and runs the Laois Physiotherapy Clinic in Portlaoise having previously been in a business partnership with Jimmy Galvin in the Killarney Physiotherapy Clinic.
