A GAA tournament dedicated to Kerry’s greatest sports star, which has been running for the past five years, is to be given a new lease of life this year through the involvement of national schools from various parts of the country.

The annual Colm Cooper Tournament, hosted by his former national school, The Monastery in Killarney, will this year feature teams representing all the Presentation primary schools in Ireland, adding a new dimension to the event and creating a great sense of anticipation.

The unique tournament, which will take place in Killarney on Friday, June 6, will mark the 175th anniversary of The Mon by bringing boys from all parts of Ireland together to forge links with each other through sport.

“We were delighted when all schools who were invited accepted the invitation and we are now looking forward to a great football tournament,” said Mon principal Colm Ó Súilleabháin.

The schools taking part will include Bunscoil Chríost Rí, Cork; Greenmount NS, Cork; St Joseph’s NS, Mardyke, Cork; Coláiste Mhuire, Cobh; Nagle Rice NS, Milltown; St Brendan’s NS Birr, Co Offaly and, of course, the Monastery, Killarney.

It is the first gathering of its type for Presentation schools in almost 200 years.

Dr Crokes and Kerry star Colm Cooper will, of course, be on hand to make the presentations and that will add greatly to the excitement for everyone involved.
