New faces go behind the counter

Corkery’s Bar on High Street

THIS weekend marks the end of an era in the commercial life of Killarney as the landmark Corkery’s Bar on High Street comes under new management.

The successful business – a hugely popular public house which also had a great reputation for good food – has been owned and run by the Corkery family for over seven decades and they also operated a small grocery shop, at the front of the building, for several years.

Tadhg Corkery, his wife, Joan, and their children, Jerome, Tadhg and Mary, were familiar faces behind the counter for a whole generation of Killarney people and visitors to the town who always made a beeline for the public house that was renowned for its friendly welcome and great atmosphere.

The pub was a firm favourite with sports fans, cards enthusiasts and darts players and the Corkerys were generous sponsors of several events and clubs, including pitch and putt, seven-a-side soccer, darts and the GAA.

In a message posted on social media, the Corkery family remarked: “A huge thank you to everybody who has supported us over the last 72 years. It has been a wonderful life inside the counter of Corkery’s Bar where we made good friends”.

It is understood that the new management team is also involved in the K-Town Bar on Beech Road.
