
A total of €1,043,000 has already been allocated by the National Transport Authority to prepare for the development of new cycle path in Killarney town under Active Travel proposals, it has emerged.
The projects are currently being progressed by Kerry County Council’s Active Travel Team but the anticipated start dates for construction are dependent on a number of matters outside of the local authority’s control.
The matter was raised at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council by Cllr John O’Donoghue who asked for funding details and estimated start times.

Council officials said 2023 funding has been granted for the following proposed cycle paths:
- Upper Lewis Road – From the St Anne’s Road junction to just south of Bridgefield
- Rock Road – From the car park northward to N22 roundabout at Cleeny
- Deerpark Road – From the Park Road junction to Gaelscoil Road junction
- Gaelscoil Faithleann Road/Chestnut Drive – From the Deerpark Road to Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre
- Flesk Walkway and Cycleway
- Park Road – From the Park Road roundabout to the Franciscan Friary junction
- Ballydribbeen Link
The anticipated construction start date for the majority of the projects in the final quarter of next year but the Ballydribbeen Link and the Upper Lewis Road sections might not commence until the final quarter of 2026.
The proposed new infrastructure includes a total of 3.8km of cycle paths on Rock Road, Lewis Road, Park Road, the Gaelscoil Road and Deerpark Road.
During the public consultation phase, 94 submissions were received and 79 welcomed the proposals.
