SIGNS of a new algal bloom, which can be potentially lethal to dogs, have been detected on Lough Leane, it can be confirmed.
Kerry County Council will be erecting precautionary signage his Tuesday at locations near Ross Castle, at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and on the shoreline near the Hotel Europe.
The council has identified algal growth – like a dark scum substance – along the southwestern shore of Lough Leane at a number of locations.
In accordance with protocols, signage is being erected and those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution and not to allow dogs to enter the water.
There are indications of conditions which may give rise to further blooms at other shoreline locations owing to the prevailing warm and humid conditions.
Kerry County Council said it will continue to monitor this issue very closely.
It should be stressed, however, that Lough Leane is currently considered to be in very good condition and that the main overriding factor for algal growths is the exceptionally warm weather that has experienced over the last few weeks.
During the months of May to September an algal bloom or darkish scum may appear on or close to the shoreline.
The public has been advised to avoid contact with this scum as it may cause skin irritation and to keep all dogs away from the water and shoreline.
