THE shocking discovery of a load of household rubbish dumped in a town centre residential area has led to a call for a text alert system to be immediately set up in an effort to track down offenders.

Cllr Brendan Cronin said he was disgusted to discover the mess when it was brought to his attention by residents of St Mary’s Terrace and Castlerosse Cottages, which links New Street with New Road.

To add insult to injury, the rubbish was dropped right alongside a sign warning that anyone caught illegal dumping would be would be fined €3,000 by Kerry County Council.

“To see this along a passageway in a residential area is disgusting and frustrating, to say the least. All the great work being done by council staff and volunteers doesn’t seem to be getting the message across,” Cllr Cronin told KillarneyToday.com.

He said it highlights the need for a new text alert system that would send a message direct to the council litter warden who could react as quickly as possible to try to nab the perpetrators.

“We need to catch these people, prosecute them and name and shame them. We must fast-track the information to the warden so that he can act immediately”.

Just last February Cllr Cronin highlighted another case of disgraceful illegal dumping when he came across old building materials, including broken PVC window frames, shattered panes of glass, damaged timber and  metal, thrown into an incline on the road from Bawanaglanna to Cockhill in Kilcummin – just feet away from a Kerry County Council warning sign.
