Music man’s daughter takes up awareness role

Hermione Hennessy: Ambassador for workplace cancer

A DAUGHTER of the late great Kerry music legend Christie Hennessy has been appointed as an ambassador for workplace cancer by the Irish Cancer Society.

Hermione Hennessy, who is following in her father’s footsteps as a wonderful singer and performer, said accepting the role was “a great honour”.

The announcement was made on Tuesday which was officially designated World Cancer Day.

Tralee native Christie, who passed away in December 2007, at the age of 62, was diagnosed with mesothelioma which is an incurable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Of her dad’s illness, Hermione said: “The experts told us it was caused by exposure to asbestos that happened sometime in his early 20s through his work on building sites”.

She added: “Dad wanted to raise awareness of this disease in order to help others be diagnosed sooner and he decided to make it public during his treatment. If you see something in your workplace that you are worried about, please don’t be afraid to draw attention to it.”

Balladeer Christie had been at the forefront of Irish music for over 30 years and his wonderful voice and incredible lyrics live on.

A collection of Christie’s beautifully crafted hits, re-recorded with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, has been reimagined, orchestrated, arranged and produced by his son, Tim, and it brilliantly captures his unique vocals.
