The condition of the bypass road in Killarney is so deplorable that motorists could be forgiven for thinking they were driving on a pitch and putt course, a local councillor has pointed out.
Cllr Marie Moloney said there are several holes on the road that drivers have to avoid but the bypass is only one of several routes in the town that need urgent attention.
“The approach roads into Killarney are so bad that people are rattling their way to town,” she said.
Cllr Moloney said the road from town to the Liebherr plant in Fossa is in a terrible condition and it should be surfaced as soon as possible and Transport Infrastructure Ireland needs to carry out urgent repairs on the bypass.

Cllr Moloney also highlighted the state of the road from East Avenue to Woodlawn Cross which has a deep trench caused by the hooves from jaunting car horses.
Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, said €48,000 in funding has been secure3d for the East Avenue to Woodlawn road under the defect management system but the rut caused by the horses would need €75,000 to address so other forms of funding will have to be explored.
The €48,000 will cover the cost of limited drainage works on the western side of Muckross Road to alleviate a surface water issue and a limited amount of footpath and surface repairs will be carried out.
In relation to the road at Fossa, preliminary investigations to inform the design proposals must be carried out before the project is submitted for funding while, on the bypass, localised short-term repairs have taken place and a report will be submitted for Transport Infrastructure Ireland funding.
