Santa Claus came a little early in Killarney to ensure Ireland’s tidiest large town stays that way during the holiday season.
While thousands of people are on the streets, racing between shops and catching up with family and friends, those charged with the responsibility of keeping the town looking its best will be out and about and active right up to the last minute.
Toe help in the ongoing battle against litter – a war Killarney is winning – new solar-powered bins have been installed at various points throughout the streets and people are encouraged to use them.

The smart waste disposal bins read the fill-level in real-time and triggers an automatic compaction of the waste, effectively increasing the bins’ capacity.
The compaction mechanism runs on a battery, which is charged by the solar panel.
By utilising renewable solar energy, these bins reduce the carbon footprint and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.
An added bonus is that the branding on the bins reminds passers-by that Killarney is a single use coffee cup free town.
It is Ireland’s tidiest large town after all.
