Mentors to teach open road skills to cyclists

Members of Killarney Cycling Club take time out from a road trip to Caherciveen

Killarney Cycling Club is to begin its mentoring programme on this Thursday, April 20, to provide adults with an opportunity to gain skills and the experience of cycling as a group on the open road in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Those interested in developing gaining more experience but don’t feel ready to turn up on a Sunday morning for the club’s weekly spins should note that this is an excellent opportunity to get started.

The programme will begin at 6.45pm from St Oliver’s National School in Ballycasheen on Thursday.

Experienced cycling club members will accompany beginners on the weekly cycle, extending the distance gradually from 20km the first evening to 70km after seven nights. One of the evenings will include a maintenance and basic repair skills demonstration to help anticipate potential bike problems and decrease risk.

One of the many advantages of cycling is that it is far easier to increase distance than in some other sports and anyone finishing the programme will be well on the way to cycling the Ring of Kerry and all the other charity events organised throughout the year. The club said cyclists benefit greatly from the networking with like-minded people on these programmes as well as becoming more familiar with the many breathtaking cycle routes on their doorstep.

Participants will need a roadworthy bike, helmet, a drink, front and rear lights, a spare tube and an eagerness to have a go. Anybody with any questions should contact Fiona on 085-7897725.
