With the colourful BikeFest and the bank holiday weekend festivities expected to attract thousands of people to Killarney this weekend, a specially convened meeting was held this morning in an attempt to implement a short-term traffic management plan to help cope with the massive influx.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, organised an emergency meeting, to which the relevant stakeholders were invited, to determine what measures can be taken to ease the expected gridlock on the streets and the approach roads.
The mayor was joined by Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, Sgt Dermot O’Connell of An Garda Siochána and Pádraig Treacy, co-president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce to try to put a workable plan in place.
Gardai will consider the suggestions made in their approach to management on the roads over the course of the weekend and, it is understood, there will be a concentration on relieving congestion at roundabouts in particular.
Traffic and a lack of proper parking in Killarney has emerged as one of the major issues of contention encountered by candidates on the doorsteps in the lead up to the local elections on Friday of next week.
It has become clear that a mult-storey car park is one part of the required solution and it is expected that a report to be presented shortly will recommend the Áras Phadraig site on Lewis Road to be the most suitable location.
