Medical service success should be duplicated

Best practice models should be duplicated, where possible, in order to deliver the best possible outcomes

The possibility of duplicating a medical service already operating successfully in Tralee on a countywide basis has been raised by a Kerry TD.

Deputy Michael Cahill said he has been told of excellent health outcomes, low waiting times and very good accessibility at the Manor Medical Centre in Tralee.

“I have received reports of patients receiving excellent health care in a time-efficient manner over Christmas which is a time when not all medical practices were open,” he said.

The newly elected Fianna Fáil TD said patients are often waiting up to 48 hours and much longer at the county’s accident and emergency department.

“If this medical model is working well and based on the reports that I have received, there should be no reason why we could not arrange such centres in Killarney, Listowel, Kenmare, Caherciveen and Dingle,” Deputy Cahill told KillarneyToday.com.

“We are all aware that the rise in respiratory illnesses has put huge additional pressures on the emergency department in University Hospital Kerry and I am aware of a number of cases whereby individuals living half an hour from Tralee went to Manor Medical Centre, were seen by a doctor, received their prescription, went to a pharmacy and were back home within an hour and a half.

“Best practice models should be duplicated, where possible, in order to deliver the best possible outcomes for our sick and vulnerable,” said Deputy Cahill.
