SEVERAL copies of The Man Who Built Washington – the life story of the late John McShain – have been donated by the Hagley Museum and Library in Delaware to Killarney House which is a magnificent town centre property the billionaire businessman donated to the people of Ireland.
The books, as part of a novel outreach project, will be allocated to a number of institutions including the Public Records Office in Belfast, which is home to the Kenmare Estate papers. Derry Central Library will also receive a copy as John McShain’s parents hailed from Derry before immigrating to Philadelphia around 1885.
Kerry Library will be the greatest beneficiary from the outreach project as it will receive a copy for six branches and three for their archives and local history department.
This project is being coordinated by Conor Doolan who is a visitor guide at Killarney House.
“This exciting project has developed from initial contact with the Hagley Museum for our McShain Legacy event for National Heritage Week. In the spirit of the McShain family and the generosity shown by the Hagley Museum and Library, an enduring network of organisations has now been established,” he said.
Institutions that will also receive a copy of the publication include Kerry County Council, Ross Castle, Kerry County Museum, Institute of Technology Tralee and The Horse Museum at the Irish National Stud in Kildare
Representatives of these organisations were presented with the biography following a tour of Killarney House and newly opened interpretive exhibition this Tuesday afternoon.
