Mayor ‘astonished’ with submission to county plan

Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin: Concerned with the tone and direction of the statement

THE Mayor of Killarney has expressed concern at a particular aspect of a submission to the draft Kerry County Development Plan received from the Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR).

Cllr Brendan Cronin noted that the submission had raised the fact that up to 59 per cent of new residences constructed in Kerry between 2015 and 2020 were located in open countryside, outside any villages or town, and called for measures to be implemented in new plan to reverse that trend.

“I am deeply concerned with the tone and direction of this statement,” said Cllr Cronin who said it seemed anti-rural and it would force people into towns and villages which would have devastating consequences.

“The granting of rural homes is vital in maintaining and supporting the heart of rural Kerry which, in turn, maintains rural schools, rural GAA clubs and rural communities,” he said.

“It is also vital that family members can continue to build and live on their own land adjacent to their families. Any attempt to dictate or prevent Kerry County Council from granting rural homes must be fought and opposed at every opportunity,” the mayor said in a statement issued to KillarneyToday.com.
