The former head of the IDA has been honoured in Killarney by hoteliers in appreciation for the important role he played in the promotion of tourism and business.
Abbeydorney native Martin Shanahan was feted at the annual conference of the Irish Hotels Federation at the Great Southern Hotel where he was presented with a painting of his native place.
He received the president’s award from Denyse Campbell, to mark his enormous contribution to tourism and Ireland.
“Every day hotels welcome guests and businesses that are present as a direct or indirect result of Martin’s enormous contribution to foreign direct investment and the broader Irish economy and society,” she said.
“For this, the hotel sector and the wider tourism industry thank Martin for his tireless work,” she added.
Previous recipients of this prestigious award include Martin Naughton and former President of Ireland Mary McAleese.
Mr Shanahan, now a partner with advisory firm Grant Thornton, worked with Fáilte Ireland, CERT and Forfás before joining the IDA in 2014.
