Man slipped and fell a considerable distance

The helicopter was unable to gain access to the area where the man was located

A CLIMBER has died in a fall on Carrauntoohil this Saturday.

The man, aged in his mid-50s and understood to be from Co Clare, was with a friend on the McGillycuddy’s Reeks when the accident occurred.

The incident happened shortly after noon close to Hag’s Glen which is a popular route to the summit of Ireland’s highest peak.

It is believed that the man, an experienced mountaineer, slipped and fell a considerable distance and weather conditions were reported to be good at the time.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team volunteers were summoned to the scene and the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter also attended but it was unable to gain access to the area where the casualty was located.

The chopper did manage to bring members of the mountain rescue team close to the scene and they set about carrying the man’s body down the mountain by stretcher.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted at University Hospital Kerry.
