A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the discovery of an elderly male’s body at a residence in Castlemaine on Sunday.
Gardai said a man, reported to be aged in his 60s, was arrested earlier today and he is being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007. He can be held for up to seven days.
Paddy O’Mahony, who was in his 80s, died of suspected gunshot wounds but gardai said they are investigating all the circumstances in relation to the matter.
Mr O’Mahony, who was a licensed gun owner and dealer, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to University Hospital Kerry where a post mortem examination was due to be conducted, by State Pathologist, Dr Margot Bolster, this Monday.
The scene, close to Castlemaine village on the road to Tralee road, remains preserved for technical and forensic examination.
An incident room has been established at Tralee Garda station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to the case.
One local told KillarneyToday.com that the death has caused real shock in the area.
