The price of motor fuel in Killarney has rocketed dramatically in less than a week.
KillarneyToday.com carried out a spot check at the 10 local filling stations last Friday and again this Thursday afternoon and there had been a very sharp increase in the price of petrol and diesel in just six days.
Our snap survey reveals that the biggest hike was a 14.9 cent surge for a litre of diesel and a 13 cent rise for a litre of petrol, both recorded at the same filling station.
Increases at the other local pumps varied from three cent to 10.1 cent for a litre of petrol and from three cent to nine cent for a litre of diesel.
By far the cheapest litre of petrol on offer during our snap survey, conducted between 3.15pmand 3.45pm on Thursday, was at Hegarty’s Filling Station on Muckross Road where it was priced at 178.9 a litre while the same premises also had the best price for a litre of diesel at 168.9.
Media reports yesterday revealed that the price of a petrol in one forecourt up the county had actually reached €2 per litre.
The price of petrol and diesel has climbed to its highest level in decades and AA Ireland recently noted that pump prices were had reached an unprecedented high since the company started regular surveys in 1991.
The biggest causes for the increase has been the recent global spike in the price of oil, a rise in demand for energy after many counties relaxed Covid restrictions and, of course, the dreadful situation in Ukraine is also a major factor.
