There was a major boost confirmed for Killarney in relation to housing this Thursday afternoon when it was confirmed that the planned Cronin’s Wood development, for which planning permission has been granted, will be allocated exclusively for social housing requirements.
Department approval has been received for the development consisting of 249 properties to be developed by Cooperative Housing Ireland.
Planning permission is in place, the project is underway and will it deliver over a number of phases from 2025 to 2027.
The 249 properties will comprise of:
- 38 one-bed
- 86 two-bed
- 117 three-bed
- 6 four-bed
- 2 five-bed
This project and all the units therein will form part of the social housing delivery programme and tenants will be allocated from Kerry County Council’s list approved social housing applicants.
Welcoming the development, Cllr Niall Kelleher said while it will help to reduce the housing waiting list in the town, he would prefer if the council, the developer and the builder would consider providing a portion of the houses for an affordable housing scheme for Killarney.
“The squeezed middle is the most affected in our town due to the lack of supply of new-build properties and not qualifying for social housing.
“They are also finding it very difficult to get a mortgage for the required amount,” he said.
Today’s development has also been welcomed by Cllr Marie Moloney who remarked: “This is a positive development for our social housing programme in Killarney”.
She said it was more good news on a day that a minor injuries clinic was approved for the town.
The news was also welcomed by Deputy Danny Healy-Rae who said the houses and all the units therein will form a key part of the social housing programme for approved applicants on the Kerry County Council housing list.
Cronin’s Wood is located on the eastern side of Killarney on the road from Daly’s Roundabout towards Spa.
