SIX units of the fire service are at the scene of a major fire that broke out at the Tricel factory in Killarney this afternoon.

The alarm was raised shortly before lunchtime after the blaze was detected in a section of the giant plant which is located in Tiernaboul Industrial Estate near Ballyspillane.

Killarney and Killorglin fire service personnel rushed to the scene and staff were evacuated from the building. No injuries have been reported.

The cause or the extent of the fire are not yet known but it is understood that the well-drilled company emergency plan worked exceptionally well.

An ambulance remains on standby at the scene and the road to the industrial estate has been closed.

A thick plume of smoke was clearly visible over Killarney town but it is believed that the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and a clean up operation is currently in place with operations suspended for the remainder of the day.

Tricel, owned and run by the Stack family from Killarney, has established operations in 12 countries and a distribution network servicing over 50 countries worldwide.

Formed in 1973, the company was initially known as Killarney Plastics and it has since developed into a global provider of solution-based products for multiple leading businesses across a range of industries, employing more than 200 people in Killarney.

Tricel evolved from its beginnings as a manufacturer of GRP products into a successful multinational corporation whose operating divisions span water storage, environmental, construction and distribution, including materials and oils.
