Máire and Tom take up residency roles

Kerry County Council’s newly appointed writer-in-residence Máire Holmes

KERRY County Council’s newly appointed writer-in-residence will commence her duties this month and anyone interested in mentoring or school visits should watch the Kerry Arts Office’s social media for updates.

Máire Holmes was appointed to the position which is co-funded by the Arts Council and Creative Ireland. It’s not her first residency in Kerry as she proved immensely popular in the county a number of years ago, interacting with students and writers all across the county at events, libraries and readings.

She said she is grateful to the Muckross House Trustees for providing a cottage at which she can stay during her residency and she plans to meet with writers in one-to-one mentoring session.

“I want to give dedicated writers a performance platform. The solo writer is familiar with solitude and yet seeks some way to be heard, by sharing work that is not yet published,” said Máire.

Meanwhile, Listowel native, Tom Dillon, has taken up a position as historian-in-residence with Kerry County Council on a three-month contract.

Mr Dillon will be based at Kerry Library in Tralee and he will co-ordinate research work and meet community groups and to promote interest and engagement in history among a non-academic audience.

He is a graduate of the University of Limerick, Tom completed a Certificate in Local History in 2012 and an MA with first class honours in the History of the Family in 2013.
