His late father, Tom, was involved in a legendary and epic recount in 1987 when only four votes separated himself and Dick Spring and history repeated itself this weekend when Thomas McEllistrim called a recount in the Tralee electoral area with just seven votes separating himself and Fianna Fail’s Anne O’Sullivan.

As it transpired, after a marathon recount, there were six votes between them and following the distribution of Independent Sam Locke’s surplus, O’Sullivan was deemed elected along with Fine Gael’s Angie Baily without either of them reaching the quota.

In the Kenmare electoral area, meanwhile, Fianna Fail’s Norma Moriarty became the third councillor to be elected, following Johnny Healy-Rae (Ind) and Michael Cahill (FF) and the ninth count is now underway which involves the distribution of eliminated Social Democrat Tim Clifford’s votes and the frontrunners at this stage for the other three seats are Teddy O’Sullivan Casey (FG), Dan McCarthy (Ind) and Podge Foley (Ind) with Ken O’Sullivan (FF) and Tony Donnelly (FG) giving chase.
