The brilliant Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh has won the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman Award for the month of August.
Ever since she made her debut for Kerry at the age of 16, in 2008, the classy attacker had to carry the tag of one of the greatest footballers never to win an All-Ireland.
But in August she was finally free of that label when her county beat Galway to win the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 1993.
It was a richly deserved winner’s medal for Ní Mhuircheartaigh who is regarded as one of the finest players to have ever played the game.
Her five points in 11 first half minutes sent Kerry on their way to a record 12th title.
Louise, who is from the West Kerry Gaeltacht, teaches in Tralee and lives in Killarney, also attended the launch of AIB’s landmark sponsorship agreement with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association with the bank becoming the title sponsor of the coveted All-Ireland Club Championships.
