Lives in danger at crossing to Fossa Way

THERE has been a call for a pedestrian crossing to be provided to link the entrance to Lackabane Village in Fossa to the scenic Fossa Way walk on the opposite side of the road.

Cllr Donal Grady said dozens of people are attempting to negotiate the busy road every day of the week and they are finding it next to near impossible to cross safely to enjoy a walk in the park or to return home after doing so.

Cllr Donal Grady: Wants pedestrian crossing

The road is on the main Ringo of Kerry route – linking Killlarney with Beaufort, Milltown, Killorglin, Dingle and south Kerry – and the traffic using the route is relentless.

“The place where people are crossing is on the brow of a hill and it is incredibly dangerous. There are parents with prams, people walking with dogs and elderly people trying to cross into and back from the Fossa Way and they are in fear of their lives,” Cllr Grady said.

“They are relying on drivers to stop to allow them to cross and they can be left standing there for ages. A pedestrian crossing is the only practical solution,” he added.

Cllr Grady said he has raised the matter with council officials and he hopes the matter can be resolved before the busier summertime commences.

The Fossa Way leads all the way to the national park at Knockreer and while the walk is through scenic woodlands, pedestrians have to cross the main road to access the facility.
