LOVELY Listowel has won the prestigious overall award in this year’s Tidy Towns competition.
It is the first time the Kerry town has won the top prize but it comes as no great surprise as the town had been performing really well in recent years and it was also named this year’s best small town.
There were a record 833 entries in the four categories in the 60th year of the competition.
Listowel becomes the fourth Kerry winner of the overall award, following previous successes by Sneem Kenmare and Killarney, all inspired by Archfeacon Michael Murphy.
Glaslough in Co Monaghan was named the tidiest village and Westport in Co Mayo won best large town for the second year running. The tidiest large urban centre has been won by Ballincollig in Co Cork.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, said it is a fantastic achievement for Listowel and he said the town is a very deserving winner.
“Listowel is one of a small number of centres who have consistently entered the competition since its launch in 1958. Today, all that dedication and effort has paid off,” he said.
