Lifeguards employed by Kerry County Council at the county’s Blue Flag beaches during the summer season were involved in a total of 12 rescues and hundreds of potential accidents were prevented.

Information provided at a Killarney Municipal District Council meeting, relating to the monitored bathing season from June 1 to September 15, revealed that two rescues were successfully completed in July and 10 more in August.

Separately, the lifeguards used paddle boards to give advice or assistance to swimmers further out from shore on 10 occasions in June, 11 in July and 24 in August.

First aid was administered by lifeguards to over 700 people during the three-month period.

The council employees were involved in over 40 child location alerts during the bathing season and water safety advice was offered to over 10,000 people on the 15 Blue Flag beaches.

Kerry County Council said the number of proactive interventions by lifeguards that prevented accidents or incidents from arising was well over 2,000.
