The late Liam Murphy

THE death has occurred in Killarney of Liam Murphy, a true legend of the Dr Crokes GAA Club and one of the most decorated players in the club’s long and proud history.

A stylish and tenacious player, he won no less than seven East Kerry Senior Football Championship (O’Donoghue Cup) medals during a long and illustrious playing career in the black and amber, captaining the club to divisional honours in 1960.

Liam was hugely involved in club affairs, seldom missing a game and he played a very active role in the background, serving as vice president up the time of his passing.

His two sons, Jerry and Connie, were also very accomplished athletes and footballers and Connie played senior football with Kerry from 1987 to 1995.

Two of Liam’s proudest days was when Connie was man-of-the-match in the 1992 All-Ireland Club Championship final in Croke Park and when he won an All-Star award in 1989 after a series of hugely impressive displays for his county.

Liam, who passed away peacefully in the Heatherlea Nursing Home in Killarney, is survived by his wife, of Sheila, children Mary, Sheila, Jerry, Connie and Kate, sons-in-law Kieran, Pat and Eoghan, daughters-in-law Catherine and Yvonne, grandchildren David, Alison, Juliette, Steven, Trish, Adam, Laura, Mark, Lia and Tara, many other relatives and friends and his Dr Crokes family.

Reposing at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney on Monday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, removal will take place afterwards to St Mary’s Cathedral.

Requiem Mass will be on Tuesday at 10.30am with burial afterwards in the New Cemetery, Killarney.
