Lethal bends the scene of too many crashes

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr John Sheahan: Far too many accidents on the bends

TOO many serious crashes have occurred on a notorious stretch of roadway and every effort must be made to make the area safer for road users, the Mayor of Killarney has stressed.

Cllr John Sheahan has asked senior Kerry County Council officials to liaise with Transport Infrastructure Ireland to finalise the purchase of the lands required to bypass the treacherous bends at Stagmount in Rathmore.

He said it is extremely dangerous and very recently a vehicle overturned there with the occupants requiring treatment in hospital.

“It hit a wall, ended up on its roof and two people were hurt. There are far too many accidents at that location,” Cllr Sheahan stressed.

Council officials said following the completion of a Part 8 planning process in mid 2018, the process for the acquisition of lands necessary for the scheme commenced.

“It is hoped that this process will be completed in early 2019 to enable the scheme to advance to construction in 2019, subject to the availability of the necessary funding,” the local authority said in a written reply to the mayor.

Meanwhile, Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has asked council engineers to rectify what she described as “a dangerous dip” in the road at Mounthorgan Cross in Shrone, Rathmore where it joins the N72.

She asked for the road to be raised to ensure adequate vision and safety for road users.

Kerry County Council said, however, that the road has been examined and although there is a minor depression at the junction, it does not adversely affect the sightlines  which are well in excess of desirable distances sought by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
