Legion to prove itself as One Good Club

The new initiative offers clubs the opportunity to support all members and engage in activities that can promote their health and wellbeing

KILLARNEY Legion GAA Club has been selected to represent Kerry in the innovative One Good Club programme, promoted by youth mental health organisation Jigsaw and sponsored by retail giant Lidl.

Developed in partnership with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, the five-step awareness programme aims to build and encourage positive mental health promotion in the community and participating clubs will commit to the initiative for a 10-week period from March 1.

Awards to the value of €10,000 are available to clubs who demonstrate innovation, most community involvement or the highest level of engagement. The new initiative offers clubs the opportunity to support all members and engage in activities that can promote their health and wellbeing and the required steps include Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Give and Keep Learning.

Each step will provide participating clubs with a suite of suggested activities, simple enough to complete without a significant time or resource commitment.

Activities include connecting with the community by hosting a coffee morning, organising fun get active sessions aimed at younger members of the community not involved in sport or introducing meditation and mindfulness as part of the cool down after training.

The Legion club will be encouraged to undertake activities and to capture the moments and share them on social media using the hashtag #OneGoodClub and the clubs that complete all five steps in the programme will receive gear and kit.

Accredited clubs will also enter the running to win a Lidl One Good Club funding award with a total value of €10,000.

Killarney Legion PRO, Elaine O’Donoghue, said the club is looking for volunteers to help out and she stressed that no football experience needed.

“The programme is made up of simple actions aimed at boosting mental health and wellbeing,” she said.
