WHILE Dr Crokes were busy winning the All-Ireland Club Championship in Croke Park, arch rivals Killarney Legion were in the process of claiming a title of their own when they scooped the overall prize in the Killarney St Patrick’s Day parade.

It was the club’s second year in a row winning the crown and members and officials have been presented with the Sean O’Keeffe perpetual trophy in memory of the late chairman of Killarney Urban District Council who was very regularly the colourful master of ceremonies for the annual parade.

The fun-filled Legion entry, which proved to be big hit with the public and hugely impressed the three judges, was masterminded by club member Stella Monoley and her team comprised Patricia Boland, Tommy Galvin, Fiona Cotter, Denise Fogarty, Carol Ann Spellman, Majella Fleming and Desiree Crowley.

Also very actively involved were Suzanne McCarthy, Orla Culloty, Timmy O’Donoghue, Brian Moriarty, Paddy Osborne and the club’s children’s officer Christina Tangney.

The awards ceremony, held in the International Hotel last night, honoured all the prizewinners, including Fossa GAA Club which won the best sporting entry for a very entertaining float, and Killarney Celtic’s Football For All group who won the best interpretation of the theme, Diversity.

The adjudicators this year were Nancy Hegarty of the Killarney Active Retired Association, Orlaith Monks of Killarney Musical Society and Kieran Healy, the lead singer with popular local wedding band Truly Diverse.

The chairperson of the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney, Anne Marie Kennelly, thanked the public for braving the elements to take part and to line the streets for the parade and she reserved particular praise for grand marshals WRC competitors Paul Nagle, Rob Duggan, Ger Conway and Noel O’Sullivan Jnr of Killarney and District Motor Club.
