A KILLARNEY secondary school student, who is a talented and enthusiastic baker, has finished third in a nationwide competition thanks to a spectacular cake she created.

Laura Looney, a fifth year student in St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, competed in the senior category of the Ceist All-Ireland Bake Off.

She was one of seven students shortlisted and the big event took place at Ardscoil na Trionoide in Athy, Co Kildare.

Each student had three hours to bake and decorate their masterpieces and the standard on the day was exceptionally high.

Laura was accompanied on the day by her mother Karina and her home economics teacher Catherine O’Donoghue

For senior students, the bake-off was centered on the theme of community and students had to design, bake and decorate a cake to reflect the theme.

The cakes were judged on taste, texture and appearance and Laura decided to base her cake on LGBTQ+, creating a delicious three tier coffee cake, which she decorated with piped buttercream icing in an array of colours. She also moulded people figures using fondant icing.
