Killarney’s last goodbye to Murt

THERE were emotional scenes in Killarney this Thursday as the town said a poignant last farewell to one of its best-loved sons.

The late Murt O’Shea, a former Fianna Fail councilor and patron of Dr Crokes GAA club, was laid to rest in Aghadoe following Requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral at which Parish Administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, was the principal celebrant.

Just as they had done prior to the removal the previous evening, hundreds of mourners filed into St Mary’s Cathedral to pay their respects and to express their sympathy to Murt’s daughters Margaret, Sheila, Bernie, Mary and Tracey, sons Sean and Pat, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers and many other relatives.

Fittingly, guards of honour were provided by Dr Crokes GAA club, Fianna Fail and former Killarney Town Council members and the coffin was draped in the black and amber flag that had meant so much to him.

Murt’s son, Pat, and daughter, Sheila, delivered emotion-charged eulogies in the church in which they reflected on many of his several great qualities.

Kerry County Board and Munster Council officials, past and present Kerry players, the close-knit Dr Crokes’ family and the people of Killarney turned out in force to remember one of life’s gentlemen who was later laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Bridie, in Aghadoe.
