Happy days: Murt and Bridie O’Shea

SEVERAL hundred people are expected to turn out this Wednesday evening and again on Thursday as Killarney bids a poignant last farewell to the late Murt O’Shea.

The former long-serving member of Killarney Town Council and the patron of Dr Crokes GAA club passed away, suddenly, early on Monday.

His remains will repose at O’Shea’s Funeral Home this evening from 3.30pm to 6.30pm with removal at 6.30pm to St Mary’s Cathedral.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10.30am with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery, Killarney.

The O’Shea family has asked for donations, in lieu of flowers, to be made to Rockmount Day Centre, Kilgarvan.

A great sportsman who could turn his hand to any code, Murt won an East Kerry minor championship in 1949 and again in 1950. He also has a minor county championship medal and he won a Kerry senior football championship title with Dick Fitzgeralds in 1951.

He won an East Kerry SFC medal in 1956 and he was also a basketballer of some renown.

The Marian Terrace man served in various positions with Dr Crokes and was honoured by the black and amber who elected him trustee at the same time as his beloved wife, Bridie, who passed away in 2014, was vice president of the club.

Murt is survived by his daughters Margaret, Sheila, Bernie, Mary and Tracey, sons Sean and Pat, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister Sheila, brothers Paddy and Seano, sisters-in-law, many other relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
