KILLARNEY will turn a shade of deep purple this weekend as the town participates in the official annual celebration of the Purple Flag programme, which recognises excellence in the management of the evening and night-time economy in Ireland and the UK.
There now are over 70 towns and cities in Ireland and the UK who are proudly flying the Purple Flag after working hard to gain accreditation. Areas awarded the honour are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture between the times of 5pm to 5am, while promoting the safety and well-being of visitors and local residents.
In Killarney this is achieved by working in partnership between the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Killarney Municipal District Council, gardaí, vintners, night-time security providers, the educational sector and the KDYS.
The evening and night-time economy is an important sector of the overall economy and businesses in Killarney are being encouraged to continue their support of Purple Flag and recognise the advantages of having it.

Killarney’s Purple Flag Working Group is planning to celebrate the event this weekend and it is seeking the support of all hotels, businesses, retailers, public buildings and others over this weekend for some of the following initiatives:
- Decorating your windows in purple
- Partifcipate in Purple Friday or Saturday with staff dressed in purple
- Prominent buildings/cultural/heritage/businesses illuminated purple
- Purple themed events
- Purple Flag merchandise/flags/bunting
On Saturday the Purple Flag Mascot will be circulating in the town centre – so keep an eye out for a selfie opportunity.
Representatives from the Purple Flag Working Group are calling to premises in the coming week with their recently acquired Painting Killarney Purple stickers which are to be placed at the entrance to each business. This is to make both visitors and locals aware that Killarney is a Purple Flag destination.
“Retention of our Purple Flag status is very important in terms of visitor perception and our reputation. Killarney Purple Flag looks forward to your support and efforts over the weekend,” said Working Group Chairman Frank Doran.
